Pharmacokinetics is the branch of pharmacology that studies how an organism affects a drug. It involves the analysis of four key processes:
- Absorption: The process by which a drug enters the bloodstream after administration.
- Distribution: How the drug is dispersed throughout the body’s tissues and organs.
- Metabolism: The biochemical process by which the body breaks down and converts the drug into active or inactive forms.
- Excretion: The elimination of the drug from the body, primarily through urine or feces.
Together, these processes determine the onset, duration, and intensity of a drug's effects, crucial for understanding its therapeutic applications and potential side effects.
